Dyslexia is a disorder that
can be medically described as a reading disability arising when the brain
cannot process graphic symbols optimally. This disorder creates difficulty in
understanding written materials that contain certain letters, words, phrases
and/or spellings.
The National Center for Learning Disabilities says that dyslexia is a neurological, and often genetic condition, and not the result of poor teaching, instruction or upbringing.
There are many private
special education schools throughout NYC that take in kids who have dyslexia
and provide them with the best education as well as therapy sessions to
overcome this learning challenge.
Here are a few therapy
guidelines and tips to take care of when dealing with a child with dyslexia-
According to some private
special education schools, kids suffering from dyslexia benefit a lot from
speech therapy sessions held in school.
This therapy helps them work
on their phonemic awareness, i.e. their ability to understand and learn from the
sounds of letters and their combinations that form words.
Most kids dealing with dyslexia
need to be taught in multi-sensory ways that resonate with what say see, hear
and feel.
The teaching material that is
specially designed by special education schools should be presented to the kids
in small parts instead of throwing a lot of information towards them in one go.
Another important thing to
take care of when giving therapy sessions to dyslexic children is to encourage
their queries and ignore a few errors while doing written assignments.
This improves their
confidence level, thus encouraging them to put in more efforts in their
learning.
Since teaching students with
dyslexia involves imparting knowledge on multisensory levels, ‘scaffolds’ can
be of great help.
They are teaching aids, similar
to cue cards and charts that help children think and correlate more clearly as
they learn new information.
With these guidelines, a
dyslexic child can be helped to learn better and faster.
